In Mr. Randle's constitution class, I proudly announced that I remembered seeing the Ku Klux Klan land in a small airplane in a field outside of McPherson. Mr. Randle corrected me in front of the entire class, and said that was impossible, as I wasn't even born yet when such a thing might have happened, and everyone laughed. Publicly chastised, I told my parents that no one believed my story. Turns out, something like this did happen and it was a story told in my family when I was growing up. It must have seemed so vivid to me that I internalized it and actually felt like I had been there. I found this interesting information about the Klan in Kansas; it's a good and short read.

This isn’t exactly a story about embarrassment, except maybe for McPherson’s self image. About 10 or 15 years ago Linn Peterson, the town historian, stopped by our family’s table in one of the Chinese restaurants in mcp. During the conversation I said something about the old Teen Town location above Firestone. He casually said, “Oh yeah, where the Ku Klux Klan used to meet.” 

Very interesting! I couldn't find anything on my initial googling of McPherson + KKK. Anyone else have info? Someone from my family must have been at that rally. I sure hope they were hoodless!
