Things to Do

From Keith Swinehart:

1) How about a drive around McPherson County to remember how beautiful the prairie can be? A great answer is to drive the Prairie Trail Scenic Byway. [This link has a map of the trail and more links at the top for pictures, an itinerary with descriptions of highlights on the trail, a GPS tour & more.  Lane]  The driving trail meanders on hard surfaced back roads, starting in Canton, passes by Maxwell Wildlife Refuge, continues to Lindsborg with its art galleries and quaint shops, on to Marquette and a unique Motorcycle Museum, and west to Kanapolis and Mushroom Rock State Park.

2) McPherson Water Park is a nice spot on a hot summer day, especially if you have grandkids in the area. It is a wonderful facility with a lazy river and 50 meter, 8-laned pool. It's even better (much, much better) than our famous old circular swimming pool.

3) Nearby Hutchinson has two tour sites that you won't find anyplace else. The Kansas Cosmosphere is a fabulous Smithsonian connected space museum, complete with an IMAX theater, rocket ships, space modules and tons of historic scientific memorabelia. For information about the exhibits, or what's playing at the IMAX call 800-397-0330.

5) Also in Hutch is The Kansas Underground Salt Museum, a two hour tour 700 feet underground through cool, dark tunnels of salt. If it sounds goofy, it isn't. It is a very interesting experience. Call ahead to make reservations, 866-755-3450.

6) Shopping can be fun in McPherson. Try The Cook's Nook on Main Street, The Stone Chimney on East First Street, VAAM Gallery located in the McPherson Opera House. Stop at The Well, the corner of Main and Kansas Ave, if you just want to sit and have a cup of coffee and snack, and are curious about where the Class of 1960 Reunion Organizers organizers were planning.
